Distinguishing Between Allergy/Asthma Symptoms and COVID-19

While allergies, asthma, and COVID-19 can share some overlapping symptoms, there are key distinctions to consider:

  • Allergies: Typically involve itching, sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal congestion. They are often triggered by specific allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Allergies do not typically cause fever, muscle aches, or loss of taste/smell.
  • Asthma: Characterized by wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Asthma symptoms can be triggered by allergens, exercise, or respiratory infections. Asthma, by itself, does not typically cause fever, muscle aches, or loss of taste/smell.
  • COVID-19: Can present with a wide range of symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, loss of taste/smell, and gastrointestinal issues. While some COVID-19 symptoms overlap with allergies and asthma, the presence of fever, muscle aches, and loss of taste/smell is more indicative of COVID-19.

Managing Allergies and Asthma During the Pandemic

  • Continue your prescribed allergy and asthma medications as directed by your physician.

COVID-19 Vaccination and Allergies

For most people with allergies, COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. However, if you have a history of severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), please discuss your concerns with your allergist. We can evaluate your risk and provide guidance on vaccination.

Long-Term Effects of COVID-19 on Asthma

COVID-19 can have long-term effects on respiratory health, particularly for individuals with asthma. Some people with asthma who have had COVID-19 may experience persistent respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath and coughing. It is very important to continue to follow up with your physician after having COVID-19.

We are here to support you in managing your allergies and asthma during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns.
